DuPont™ Corian® Lights Up ICFF with New Translucent Illumination Series

NEW YORK, May 19-22, 2007 – Showcasing the constant evolution of its design possibilities, DuPont™ Corian® unveils its translucent Illumination Series at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair® (ICFF) in New York City, May 19-22, 2007.

The two new translucent colors, Arctic Ice and Glacier Ice, allow up to three times as much light to pass through than other Corian® colors, providing architects and designers with new and endless design possibilities — combining the many dimensions of light with a material that can be formed, bent, textured and cut.  Glacier Ice, a warm, solid, translucent color, will be available Summer 2007.  Targeted availability for Arctic Ice, made with particulates, will be available Fall 2007.

“Through the magic of illuminated Corian®, artists can create feelings through multi-sensory environments that combine light with Corian®.  They can soothe, dazzle or even excite people with endless design possibilities,” said Alexa Dembek, DuPont Surfaces North American marketing manager.  “We’re always striving to provide the design community with solutions to help them realize their wildest dreams and we hope the Illumination Series is another step in getting them to see Corian® in a new light.”

LightShowers
Echoing the theme of light and the sensorial qualities of Corian®, at its ICFF booth, DuPont Surfaces is showcasing LightShowers, an exhibit that demonstrates dynamic results that can be achieved when applying the material with video and lighting.  Both LightShowers and the surrounding booth are the design work of architects Yoshiko Sato and Michael Morris of New York City-based Morris Sato Studio.

“The installations are a study of lighting and space that merges art, architecture and fabrication.  We worked closely with the fabricators, Evans & Paul, Sterling Surfaces and R.D. Wing Co., Inc. to make our visions a reality,” said Morris.  ”LightShowers in particular shows the integration of these three disciplines, while exploring the way in which environment influences psychology and encompasses all the performance properties of Corian®,” added Sato.

Morris and Sato worked closely with the fabricators articulating in a precise and balanced composition the organic structure of the seating and the geometric slab pieces for the platform base.  The Glacier White Corian® was then CNC cut and routed to form sleek, distinct sculptural seats and after a laborious process of sanding and polishing, each piece was finished by hand.  Additionally, the fabricators milled the Corian® from the underside to create the platform, which not only concealed the LED lighting, but permitted the light to glow from beneath the crisp white color, creating a reflection of projected light.
In addition to the new translucent capabilities, non-porous Corian® is a high-performing, easy to clean, stain-resistant solid surface material that is durable and renewable.  Scratches are easily removed without marring its beauty and uniformity of color.  Corian® can be thermoformed into custom shapes and contours, sandblasted, routed, carved, laser-etched and backlit, making it ideal for a wide range of residential, commercial, furniture and specialty applications.  More information is available at corian.com or by calling 800-436-6072.

Yoshiko Sato and Michael Morris are partners in the multidisciplinary architecture practice Morris Sato Studio based in New York City since 1996.  Internationally recognized for their architecture, design, and public art collaborations, Morris and Sato have built and exhibited projects in North America, Europe, and Japan.  Additional to their practice both architects teach – Sato is a professor at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Morris at Parsons School of Design.  Further information is available at www.morrissato.com
