The Power of WE - In Depth Coverage on The AWI Standards Process

At the 2008 ISSFA Day at the EXPO, Todd Werstler talked about the power of “We” as ISSFA. In his article in the premier issue of this magazine he wrote about a town hall meeting he attended in Boston late in 2007. “After a lively discussion, WE hammered out some outstanding program ideas that are coming to life in 2008. WE, the ISSFA AWI Document Committee, are going to develop a detailed solid surface fabrication and use guideline section for use in the AWI manual.”

The committee was formed at the Surface Fabrication & Design EXPO and over the next few months developed the plan and ideas. A committee meeting was held in Ohio on May 28th and the documents were created by the combined hard work of Gus Blume, Jon Lancto, Kurt Bonk, Todd Werstler, Jon Olson, Mike Job and Bill Wolle.

The submittal documents received final approval by the ISSFA Board of Directors on June 13, 2008 and were submitted to the chairman of the AWI Technical Committee and the Chief Staff Learning Officer on June 20, 2008. The documents were e-mailed to all current ISSFA members June 19th and are available in the member’s section of www.issfa.org in the document vault. Please feel free to refer to or attach them in any communications with architects, specifiers, owners, and any others that have a need.

WE are proud of this achievement, as it represents a uniform standard for solid surface specification and fabrication, which will help increase awareness of the various materials and their applications. While this is not a singular effort, it does represent the ongoing mission ISSFA undertakes to ensure WE have the tools needed to make great strides in the industry.

And WE are not done! WE are now in the process of converting these documents into an architectural presentation which will be delivered to ISSFA members at the Regional Meeting on September 26th.

Thanks to Tom Mather and Jon Olson, the WE that saw the need. Thanks to the ISSFA Board of Directors, the WE that determined the path forward. Thanks to Gus Blume, Jon Lancto, Kurt Bonk, Todd Werstler, Jon Olson, Mike Job and Bill Wolle, the WE that is driving the project forward. And thanks to all ISSFA members, the WE that makes everything possible!
